Preview:
First quarter state-by-state distribution of venture capital has much the same look to it as we've seen over the last few years, California and Massachusetts, between them, captured 63-cents of every dollar put to work by VC firms reporting to the PricewaterhouseCoopers/NVCA/Venture Economis Money Tree; and California ,ark was on most of that. Each quarter we witness California edge closer and closer to the point where the state would record half or more of venture investments. This quarter it was 48.6 percent.

Other states with meaningful numbers include Texas 5.5%, Washington 5%, New York 4.1% and Colorado 2.4%. Those six states scored more than 80% of the $5.6 billion invested in quarter one.

A few more states than usual failed to see a single venture investment, a dozen to be specific. Alaska, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakoa, Nebraska, Rhode Island, South Dakoa and West Virginia posted no investments; while eight others, Wyoming, Vermont, Nevada, Michigan, Maine, Kentucky, Hawaii and Alabama were held to but one.

We hasten to remind you that the Money Tree is a voluntary participation program. So it is possible that a deal or two was consumated without being reported.

Here is the state by state distribution for Q106:
